It's that time of year for you and your parents to begin the task of preparing to complete the FASA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This form is used to determine your eligibility for federal aid, which can be in the form of Pell Grants, Work Study, federal loans, etc. You should complete this form even if you believe that you will not qualify for federal assistance. You will need: Your social security number and your parent’s social security number Your PIN number and your parent’s PIN number Your driver’s license number. Your 2008 or 2009 federal tax information or tax returns (including W-2 information) for yourself and your parents. If you have not yet filed a 2009 income tax form, you can still submit your FAFSA based on 2008 information and make any necessary changes later. Records on untaxed income, such as Social Security benefits, welfare benefits and veterans benefits for yourself and your parents Information on savings, investments, and business and farm assets for yourself and your parents. In order to complete the FAFSA application, you and a parent need to apply for a PIN number. This number is used as an electronic signature, which you will need when you complete the FAFSA application. Apply for your PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. Your number will be e-mailed to you in 1 to 3 days. If you don’t have an e-mail address, your number will be mailed to you within 7 to10 days. The 2010 FAFSA application will be available on-line after the first of the year at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Once the college, university or tech school accepts a student, they can get on-line again and complete the financial aid application. Most schools also have scholarship applications available on-line for their particular school. If your student is planning to attend an institution outside the state of Wyoming, they may or may not need to complete the WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange) application form. Institutions participating in this program will charge out-of-state students in-state tuition plus half. Please contact that institution (Financial Aid Department) for details. All seniors should have their employment resume and their scholarship/college resume completed. Samples are enclosed and are also available from Mrs. Santee at the Career Center, Mrs. Elgin or Mr. Irvine. If your student has not taken the ACT and is planning on attending a university or college, there are only 3 testing dates remaining. Registration packets are available in the guidance department or you can register on-line at www.act.org. It is important to remember that results will not arrive for approximately 4 weeks after the test date. Scholarships - As scholarships become available, they are placed in a special black box on the counter in the Guidance Department. Parents, as well as students, can check the box at their leisure. Please note that some scholarships are very specific and do not require a grade point average of 4.0. As your student is awarded a scholarship of any kind, please bring that information to the Guidance Office. This information is included in the graduation program insert. Seniors – Please read the bulletin board in the senior hall as it contains very important information for you throughout the year. This information is also posted in the hallway on the wall at the Career Center. This information includes times and dates of campus visits by various colleges, tech schools, and the branches of the military. Important dates are also posted, as well as financial aid information. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Elgin or Mr. Irvine at 856-9491. We would be happy to meet with you and assist you in this process as well as answer any questions that you may have. If you are not sure who your student’s counselor is, Mrs. Elgin generally is the counselor for students whose last names begin with A through L and Mr. Irvine for students M through Z. |
